Знакомство англичан с Русским царством и выстраивание репрезентативных моделей происходит во второй половине XVI в., когда совершаются первые торговые и дипломатические визиты, публикуются отчеты и записки путешественников. Слова из «русского» языка фиксируются в отчетах Р. Ченслера, К. Адамса, Д. Хассе и др. Тетради Д. Традесканта, и Ричарда Джемса служат примерами текстов первой четверти XVII в., авторы которых заняты систематизацией и изучением отдельных элементов пространства России. Р. Джемс составил словарь русских слов с их переводом на английский и комментариями как социально-политического, так и естественнонаучного характера. Слова из русского языка представляют для Р. Джемса не меньшую ценность, чем пойманные и отправленные Традескантом в Англию редкие звери, а его словарь демонстрирует существовавшую в нач. XVII в. связь между изучением языка и познанием мира.
